R-1 Visa Extension

As mentioned before, if you overstay your visa in Canada you may face serious consequences. These include additional fees to return home as well as issues with re-entry into Australia.

A more lenient way to handle this is by requesting an extension of your stay here. This can be done through one of two programs: Extended Visitor Status or Re-Entry Permit.

Extended Visitor Status allows for up to six months beyond your current permit while on Canadian soil. To qualify, you must have proof that you will leave Canada within the next 30 days and cannot remain longer than another 6 months due to work obligations or family ties.

You also need to provide evidence that you have adequate funds to return home after your extended trip. If you do not, there are many ways to gain money such as starting a part time job or finding freelance work.

The second program requires no employment but instead offers re-entry permits which allow for short stays at any time once again for up to six months.

If you are currently in Australia as an international student and your visa is due to expire within the next six months, you may be able to apply for a two-year extension. This kind of visa is referred to as a ‘R1’ visa.

Your existing visa will not automatically renew, you have to reapply for it. You cannot do this yourself so you will need to find someone who can help you with that.

There are several ways to re-enter Australia as a foreign student once your visa has expired. All these options require you to live overseas while you study, however. That is why most people don't qualify under this rule.

Some universities run their own programs where they cover all or part of the cost of studying here.

A non-immigrant (or tourist) visa is needed to enter Canada as a visitor for longer than three weeks. Applicants must also hold at least $7,000 in cash to cover expenses while they are here. This money should last you for more than just one month in Canada.

Applicants who do not meet this requirement will likely be denied entry to Canada. It is important to have all documents ready before arriving in Canada to avoid being stuck there.

It is possible to extend your stay beyond the initial three week period with a Reentry Permit after visiting Canada. To apply for an extension you need to bring your passport, ticket out of the country, and evidence of plans to return home within the next six months.

If you were recently denied a US immigrant or non-immigrant visa in Australia, you may be able to apply for a Resident Visitor (RV) visa instead. An RV visa is a shorter term than a normal tourist visa, but it’s still longer than six months so it’s more appropriate if your stay in Australia is going to be closer to home.

An RV visa allows you to enter and leave Australia twice every six months. You’ll need to have enough money to support yourself while you’re here as well as return flights after your second entry into the country.

You’ll also need to prove that you have a stable source of income back home and a way to fund your stay in Australia. Many employers will agree to provide proof of employment via an employer letter stating how they intend to sponsor you for permanent residency once you've finished your working holiday.

During your R-Visa application you have to give very in depth information about who is sponsoring you for the trip, where you will stay while you are visiting the country, how long you expect to remain there, and what their return plans are.

It is important to know that if you do not provide enough detail about these things then it may negatively affect your chances of being granted an R-Visa. For example, if you said you would spend one week in a city but end up staying two months then this could lower your chance of receiving the visa due to people questioning whether or not you will return home after such a short period of time.

On top of that, some countries require at least letter of confirmation from back home before granting entry so again, poor documentation could hurt your chances even more. It is best to be as thorough as possible when answering questions regarding your travel plans.

The next step in the process of getting your R-visa is to apply at the US Consulate or Embassy in your home country. To make sure everything is formalized, you will need to have proof that you are leaving the United States and returning. This includes having tickets for your return flight, evidence of sufficient money to reenter the country, and confirmation that you have transferred all belongings into your own name.

It’s important to remember that it may take several days before you know if you were successful in obtaining the visa. It’s best to be prepared for the possibility that you won’t hear back from anyone until after the holidays.

You do not have to be present during your R1 visa appointment if you are able to make it later in the process or online. Some countries require only that you be available for an interview, while others ask you to come into their country for the visit.

If this is the case for your appointment, you should know how to stay connected while traveling. There’s no need to worry about missing your appointment because you can always re-schedule through MyUSCIS or by logging onto uscis.gov directly.

We recommend doing so as soon as you find out your appointment time. We also suggest going early enough to ensure you don’t miss anything.
