Applications for work visas are not a quick process, nor do they occur only at visa offices. There are several steps that must be completed before an employer can bring you into their organization as a worker.
Step one is to apply online with VEVRA (the Electronic System To Process Visas And Alien Registration For Immigrants) – this includes submitting your application, paying fees, creating profiles, answering questions, etc. This takes about two weeks, sometimes longer depending on how quickly your computer access is.
After step one, there are three more stages where individuals in the employment approval process play a role. These include: job interviews, criminal background checks, and medical exams. All of these take place either directly between you and the potential employers or through third party vendors who perform the check.
These additional checks can add time to the process, but will almost always guarantee you get the job! Employers run thorough background checks and require proof of health insurance so if you have those, you’re less likely to be hired without them.
If you have a job waiting, then you should apply for a working visa! This allows your employer to hire you while you are in Canada on a non-residential (temporary) basis.
You must be able to prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your family while you are in Canada, as well as show that you will leave after your contract is over. You also need to make sure that you do not qualify for citizenship of another country.
It is important to remember that even though you only have temporary permission to live in Canada, it is still possible to remain here permanently once you have a work permit.
After arriving at the embassy or consulate, you’ll need to complete all of the required forms and documents before being granted entry into Canada. This can take some time depending on how many documents you have to collect and whether there are any delays in receiving them from where they were sent.
It is very important to remember that if you do not have proof of sufficient funds to stay in Canada for your initial few months here, you will likely be denied Canadian residency and possibly even visas for other countries!
This could also mean deportation back home, so it’s best to make sure everything is sorted as early as possible. It is also helpful to know what things must be done well ahead of time to avoid complications.
After you have gathered all of your documents, it is time to actually submit your visa applications! Most countries require an appointment at a embassy or consulate for approval so that they can process your paperwork there. Some even ask you to come in person while others accept phone calls or video chats as proof of presence.
Some Consulates will automatically receive your application once it has been completed but some require you to send it to them directly. Make sure to check this out before submitting because sometimes Applications get lost in translation.
Remember, if your passport expires within six months, you do not need to reapply it- only update the information! This is very important to know as most embassies will not approve your visa until they see your current passports.
After your application is accepted, it will usually take several days before you receive word about whether you have been granted a visa. This is because there are sometimes many more steps involved in granting a visa than just submitting an application!
