As mentioned earlier, hasbara is the term for “explanation of Judaism” or “Jewish outreach.” More broadly speaking, it can refer to any kind of Jewish engagement or interaction with non-Jews.

Hasbara was most famously practiced by the Nazis during World War II. After Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, his party began spreading Nazi propaganda through newspapers, radio broadcasts, and billboards across Europe.

At this time, there were very few places where Jews could feel safe. So many Jews left Germany that large cities like Paris had to close their synagogues because they didn’t have enough space to house all the refugees.

In response to these anti-Semitic attacks, various groups formed to defend Jews from hatred. Some organized armed self-defense drills at local levels while others spread knowledge about Jewish culture and history. This new wave of interest in Jewish people and their heritage was called “the return of the Jew.”

It is important to note here that although some intellectuals viewed the return of the Jew as an attempt to win back lost trust, most average Germans saw it as a threat. The vast majority felt excluded and insecure when confronted with what they considered excessive attention being paid to Jews.

Many German citizens believed that Jews used their powerful media outlets to influence opinion around the world in favor of Israel.

In early February, Australian artist Isabella Leong held her first solo show at Melbourne’s The Studio Museum of Contemporary Art (SOMA). Titled ‘Hasbulla – An Exhibition About Touching Time’, it was an exploration into time as both a quantitative and qualitative concept.

The work in the exhibition focused on different textures or layers that we add to things over time — something most people are familiar with. But for Leong, these additional touches also carry weight; they mean something beyond what they initially were.

For example, consider two photographs of the same person. One could be described as more intimate than the other, perhaps due to the way the photographer posed their shoulders together or the position of the head.

However, despite being staged, the settings themselves have significance. They tell us about the individuals who created them and how they perceived the world around them. In fact, some would say that one is slightly more powerful than the other.

That’s why I decided to include this image in my show,” said Leong.

It’s not just because it features my face, but also because I included a lot of references to my past self. My past selves, all shaped by touch.

In May of 2018, Hasbulla posted an Instagram story with her and Taylor Swift looking sizzling in very little clothes. The two were making funny faces while posing for the camera in what appeared to be a room or space that was surrounded by windows.

The caption read: “I’m trying to teach myself how to surf this week! @taylorswift13 would you help me out? #surflesson” Then, just like that, it became popular again. People took screenshots and shared them all over social media.

It didn’t take long before people started speculating about the location of the beach where the lesson takes place. Some claimed it is at the Malibu Beach Hotel, which is not true because there are no beaches close to that hotel that feature surfing lessons.

Other theories include saying it is at the Santa Monica Pier, but there is also no way Taylor would go to the pier to learn how to surf since she has never mentioned doing so anywhere else.

A fan eventually figured out that the setting is actually at Neverland Ranch- one of Disney's famous theme parks. This makes sense because the park does have a wave pool and water activities such as swimming and diving.
